Golfer Elbow Pain

Golfer’s elbow, medically known as medial epicondylitis, is a condition that causes pain and discomfort on the inner side of the elbow. It’s similar to tennis elbow (lateral epicondylitis), but the pain in golfer’s elbow is focused on the inner part of the arm near the bony bump called the medial epicondyle. Golfer’s elbow is typically caused by overuse or repetitive stress on the tendons that attach to the medial epicondyle.

Causes of Golfer's Elbow Pain:

Repetitive Motion: Continuous, repetitive actions that stress the wrist and forearm muscles can lead to inflammation and pain.

Incorrect Technique: Poor technique while performing activities can strain the forearm tendons and contribute to golfer’s elbow.

Age and Degeneration: As people age, the tendons may become less flexible and more susceptible to injury.

Symptoms of Golfer's Elbow:

Pain with Gripping: Pain when gripping objects, shaking hands, or squeezing.

Pain with Wrist Movements: Pain when flexing or twisting the wrist.

Weakness: Weakness in the wrist and hand due to pain and strain on the tendons.

Treatment and Management:

Rest and Activity Modification: Resting the affected arm and avoiding activities that worsen the pain can help the healing process.

Ice or Cold Packs: Applying ice or cold packs to the affected area can help reduce inflammation and relieve pain.

Pain Relievers: Over-the-counter pain relievers can provide temporary pain relief and reduce inflammation.

Bracing or Support: Using a forearm brace can help alleviate strain on the tendons by redistributing forces.

Physical Therapy: A physical therapist can design exercises to strengthen the forearm muscles and improve flexibility.

Stretching: Gentle stretching of the forearm muscles can help alleviate tension and improve flexibility.

If conservative treatments do not provide relief, your healthcare provider may consider other options or refer you to a specialist. It’s important to seek medical attention if the pain is severe, persistent, or interfering with daily activities. A healthcare provider can accurately diagnose golfer’s elbow and recommend appropriate treatment strategies based on your individual condition.
